A Starbucks might signal the first phase of gentrification, but the neighborhood hasn’t given in until condo-dwellers can sip imperial pints of Fuller’s London Pride straight from the draft. Harlem’s first beer garden, opens at the right place at the right time, with fifteen European drafts (heavy on the German) and over a dozen bottles, ranging from the area's own Sugar Hill Golden Ale to Kenya’s Tusker. The bar also serves gastropub grub—burgers and bratwursts—as well as brunch on weekends in the early afternoon, when young parents park strollers on the benches outside. The interior is less Bavarian beer hall than modernist cafeteria, down to the exposed vent, but a diverse crowd and welcoming bartenders make up for it. — Bryan Walsh
